How Holiday Travel Affects Traffic around America's Busiest Airports

Holiday travel impacts more than just airports. Using historical traffic data from HERE for the past three years on December 23 (a peak travel day), this map shows how traffic around America's five busiest airports changes throughout the day.

 

Scroll through to see how traffic changes around LAX, DFW, ORD, ATL, and JFK. Each GIF shows how far someone can drive in 60 minutes throughout a 24-hour period.

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)

Of the communities in this analysis, LA shows the most variability in terms of how traffic changes throughout the day. Travel to the north and the east both change significantly based on the time of day.

 

 

 

Dallas/Forth Worth International Airport (DFW)

Patterns in Dallas remain mostly consistent, with the core 15-minute and 30-minute distances staying relatively constant throughout the day.

O'Hare International Airport (ORD)

Traffic in and around downtown Chicago appear to be most impacted by changes in congestion throughout the day. The southeastern edge of the drivetime changes significantly throughout the 24-hour period.

Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL)

Traffic around Hartsfield-Jackson appears relatively steady though there are interesting changes in terms of how far north and south of the airport you can get at various times of day.
